Composing for the ScreenAn Intensive and Interactive Film and Television Scoring Workshop"In film, the element of music provides a crucial role in enlivening the narrative. How does a composer find the notes, rhythms, harmonies and instruments that produce the near-magical transformation from simple story to multi-dimensional, multi-sensory -- and often deeply moving experience?" In this workshop, we will examine music for the screen from two perspectives: that of drama, and that of movement. Using a diverse palette drawn from the history of film music, participants will collaborate in scoring short scenes excerpted from a variety of film sources. Multiple approaches will be examined and considered, from the use of ethnic timbres, to traditional orchestral scoring, to the contemporary instrumentation of current action sequences. Using the ManHatPro studios, students will record, review, share and compare work in a friendly and supportive environment. The business of film music will also be covered, and attendees will walk away with a list of reference materials designed to provide further direction towards working in the vast and fulfilling world of “Composing for the Screen”.
